Founded in 2021 by Stanford Law graduate Rich Sapien, Sapien is a boutique law firm exclusively focused on commercial transactions and product counseling for venture-backed companies—from seed-stage founders structuring early pilot agreements to pre-IPO companies negotiating six-figure enterprise deals.
The firm’s clients span AI and software startups across enterprise and consumer markets, including cybersecurity, developer tools, e-commerce, legaltech, social, and others. Its client roster includes dozens of Y Combinator portfolio companies, seven unicorns, and leading venture capital firms. Sapien has negotiated transactions opposite counterparties in nearly every major industry, including approximately a tenth of the Fortune 500.
Sapien has made a significant investment in proprietary legal technology and operations, developing a custom practice management platform and an agentic AI assistant built on the firm’s substantive expertise. A dedicated legal operations lead assists with research, client service, and administrative coordination, allowing the firm to deliver white-glove attention with the speed and efficiency of a much larger team.
Prior to practicing law, Rich Sapien worked as a web developer—a background that directly informs the firm's technical fluency. He went on to practice at Fenwick & West and Gunderson Dettmer before founding Sapien. That combination enables Biglaw sophistication with the responsiveness and pragmatism startups require.
