Strengths

A client rates the firm's media practice as "top of the range," adding: "MinterEllison delivers high-quality advice, at speed, on a daily basis. I can think of no other defamation team that is as professional, timely and easy to deal with."

Speaking of an IT-related mandate, another client reports: "MinterEllison partner well with their clients and are quick to build trust and deliver on their promises, demonstrating high levels of expertise and communicating in a way that can be clearly understood. MinterEllison are the most commercial law firm I have worked with and clearly understand how businesses operate. They also provide enormous amounts of client care and have committed to putting in long hours to ensure that tight deadlines are met."

Work highlights

MinterEllison acted for Nine Entertainment subsidiary Fairfax Media in Federal Court defamation proceedings initiated in response to allegations published by the client that former soldier and Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith committed war crimes, including murder, while serving in Afghanistan, and had also committed an act of domestic violence in Australia.

MinterEllison acted for Australian data and analytics consulting company Servian with regard to the AUD340 million sale of its business to technology multinational Cognizant.

Notable practitioners

Peter Bartlett has practised in the media space for over 35 years, winning a reputation as a pre-eminent litigator of defamation cases and trusted adviser on the full range of publication risks facing both print and broadcast media. One client, who identifies him as "the most respected solicitor in media law and a fierce advocate of press freedom," adds that he is "able to handle the greatest levels of pressure," while another notes: "I always appreciate Peter’s quick responses, clear communication and expertise." He is based in Melbourne.

Anthony Borgese is based in Sydney and focuses principally on outsourcing matters, advising clients from a variety of business sectors on mandates in that area and on similar or associated procurement, licensing and regulatory issues.

Paul Kallenbach spearheads the MinterEllison cybersecurity offering from the Melbourne office, advising on issues in that sphere and on a wide range of often complex technology procurement and implementation projects. He is described as "an outstanding individual" by a client who identifies several of his valuable qualities, including "an ability to analyse complex requirements and situations and develop sustainable solutions," and "demonstrating high levels of performance in stressful circumstances and turning challenging situations into opportunities."
