McDermott’s Illinois corporate group is one of the largest teams in Chicago. Much of our work is middle market M&A, broadly deals in the $50 million to $1 billion range, with the occasional transaction north of $1 billion.

The team advise publicly and privately held businesses, and private equity investors. We have the second largest private equity practice in Chicago and advise a large number of private equity funds and portfolio companies on a myriad of transactions. Private equity is integral to the practice, and most of our lawyers have a split public/private M&A practice.

The team also handles non-transactional work such as corporate governance and securities compliance.
McDermott has a large practice acting for wealthy families in their private M&A activities. Reflecting our combined strengths in private client work and M&A, we’re one of the few firms that can offer these families end-to-end legal advice. We’re at the forefront of the direct investing trend, whereby wealthy families and their family offices act as quasi private equity firms by investing in and acquiring companies.

As a firm with roots in the Midwest, we are close to many of the industrial companies that have traditionally been prominent in the region. We are nationally known for our strength in the healthcare and life sciences sectors.

McDermott’s Chicago office has some of the best tax practitioners in the market, and the corporate team frequently works alongside them on tax-sensitive M&A transactions.
