Foley Hoag’s International Litigation and Arbitration Department is unique among law firms, with its focus on PIL, as well as the representation of sovereign States before international arbitral tribunals and US courts, resulting in a long list of State clients from across the globe.

Foley Hoag's Africa Practice, chaired by Tafadzwa Pasipanodya, has a large and longstanding practice of representing African States and State-owned entities in international disputes. It has served as counsel to more than 20 States on the Continent over the past two decades. From energy and human rights to territorial disputes and environmental law, Foley Hoag's work in Africa is wide ranging. Although its principal focus is the representation of sovereign States and State-entities, the firm also represents private clients in litigation or arbitration of commercial disputes involving business in Africa.

Foley Hoag received international acclaim for helping The Gambia secure a historic unanimous order to stop the genocide of the Rohingya in Myanmar before the ICJ. The firm also successfully defended the rights of Nigeria in a dispute against Switzerland before the ITLOS. It also recently secured its fourth victory for Mauritius, a country it has successfully represented in inter-state disputes and investor-state disputes. Before US courts, the firm continues its long history of success by recently obtaining a victory for Tanzania.
