Foley Hoag offers clients market-leading international legal services with a particular emphasis in Latin America. Since its inception, the practice has focused heavily on the representation of Latin American sovereign States and State entities in cutting-edge international investment and commercial arbitrations, PIL disputes between States, and litigation in the U.S. courts involving the recognition, enforcement of international arbitral awards, motions to compel arbitrations, and other transboundary issues.
The Latin America practice is led by Clara Brillembourg and Kenneth Figueroa, who have widened the practice’s portfolio in the region in recent years by engaging high profile cases with billion dollar claims, including six cases for Peru, cases for its state owned entities. The firm recently secured three major victories for Uruguay, and currently represent them in another arbitration, and currently represents Chile in one of the first investment arbitrations concerning the impact of COVID-19 regulations. The firm is also representing the Dominican Republic and Guyana in two new cases.
A recent study by the Center for the Advancement of the Rule of Law in the Americas found that Foley Hoag had the highest number of international arbitrations representing Latin American States.
