What the team is known for

Alaco is a longstanding presence in London's business intelligence and investigations market. The firm's disputes practice operates in tandem with its pre-transactional team, allowing clients receiving support on contentious matters to capitalise on insight into developments across markets. The firm has a proven track record for obtaining admissible evidence, witness cultivation and stakeholder mapping in anticipation of litigation.

Strengths

"They've been fantastic in Saudi Arabia; they're probably the strongest firm there," says a market insider. "Alaco has a comprehensive, well-established network in that part of the world."

"We engage Alaco to provide confidential, ethical and reliable investigations into sensitive aspects of high-value, multi-jurisdictional litigation," says a client, adding: "Alaco is very attuned to the needs of its clients and readily adapts to individual circumstances."

Work highlights

Alaco was engaged by Omnia Strategy LLP to assist in their representation of the former president of Botswana, Ian Khama, and South African businesswoman Bridgette Motsepe-Radebe in defence of allegations of money laundering and financing terrorism lodged in Gabarone against them by the current Botswanan government. Alaco analysed the allegations to determine which, if any, of the claims were borne out by the facts. Following the publication of Alaco's findings, the government of Botswana has stepped back from its initial charges.

Notable practitioners

Nikos Asimakopoulos is head of Alaco's disputes practice and a longstanding team member at the firm. Asimakopoulos's work ranges from litigation support assignments for clients and counsel in the midst of proceedings, to post-award enforcement. He is recognised for his particular expertise in the extractive industries, particularly in Russia, Central Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

"Nikos has a lot of experience in the energy sector," says an interviewee; "his primary strength is in intelligence around areas like the oil trade. He is efficient and gets us the information we need quickly. Nikos does a phenomenal job." "He really grabbed the bull by the horns and ran with it," adds a client; "he's intelligent, experienced, and you really get the sense he cares about supporting you in your case."
