The COCIS (Cardiological Organizational Committee for Sports Fitness) Protocol, updated in 2017, sets out the assessment and fitness for sports criteria of competitive athletes with cardiovascular anomalies.
This Protocol has no normative value, but has a binding guiding function as it identifies the best clinical practices to which doctors who carry out medical-sports fitness examinations must comply.
Following heart surgery, the F.C. Inter player Christian Eriksen falls into the category of subjects with ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) and, in light of the provisions of the COCIS Protocol, this condition is incompatible with sports activities characterized by traumatic risks and high cardiovascular commitment, such as football.
It follows that, should the Danish footballer's cardiovascular problem prove to be permanent, there would be serious risks for him to obtain the fitness evaluation necessary for competitive sports and, therefore, to continue his football career in Italy.
