Shearman & Sterling has elected six counsel and two associates to the partnership, effective January 1, 2020. The new partners represent eight practices and are based in seven of our offices including Houston, London, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore, and Washington D.C.

The following lawyers were elected partner:

Roberta Berliner Cherman is a member of the Capital Markets practice in São Paulo. She focuses on advising Brazilian and international corporate issuers and financial institutions in equity and debt securities transactions, including SEC registered, institutional and private placement transactions, and in a wide range of corporate governance, finance, regulatory and other matters. She obtained her LL.B. from Faculdades Integradas Candido Mendes and an LL.M. from the University of Chicago Law School and is admitted in Brazil and New York.

Ryan Bray is a member of the Tax practice in Houston, where he focuses on corporate and international tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, tax issues arising in connection with restructuring transactions and tax issues impacting emerging companies. He obtained his J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and an LL.M. from the New York University School of Law.

James Clayton-Payne is a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions practice in Singapore. James specializes in Southeast Asian and Indian cross-border M&A with a particular focus on the private equity, venture capital, energy, infrastructure and resources sectors. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Durham University and an LPC from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice.

Michael Mitchell is a member of the Litigation practice in Washington, D.C., where he focuses on complex civil litigation and investigations for financial institutions and corporate clients. He obtained his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center.

Jennifer D. Morton is a member of the Financial Institutions Advisory & Financial Regulatory practice in New York, where she represents market participants on a worldwide basis with respect to regulatory, transactional, trading and markets issues, with particular emphasis on U.S. regulation of securities broker-dealers, alternative trading systems, clearing agencies and exchanges. She received her B.A. degree from Connecticut College and her J.D. degree from Fordham University School of Law.

Lachlan Poustie is a member of the Project Development & Finance practice in Paris, where he advises on the financing of complex infrastructure, energy and mining projects. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws from Monash University in Australia.

Benjamin Siino is a member of the International Arbitration and Public International Law practices in Paris, where he focuses on international ad hoc arbitrations, including under UNCITRAL Rules, and institutional arbitrations under the Rules of the ICC and ICSID. Benjamin also regularly acts as counsel in litigation proceedings, with a focus on seeking the enforcement of arbitral awards and foreign judgments. He obtained a D.E.A. and a Maîtrise in Public International Law from the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas (hons).

Nick Withers is a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions practice in London, where he focuses on corporate transactions, including public and private mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, private equity, joint ventures and equity capital markets, and corporate governance matters. He obtained a GDL and LPC from BPP Law School.
