Gary C. Johnson has served as the general counsel, chief compliance officer, or associate general counsel for three energy companies, and he is a senior counsel in Reed Smith’s Energy and Natural Resources Group.
He steers domestic energy clients through multiple economic cycles, through reorganizations, forbearance and liquidations; and he takes the lead on M&A and growth opportunities on the other side. He has also advised companies on transactions in Latin America, South America, China, Europe, Canada, and over 17 oil and gas producing areas in the U.S.
Gary’s deep understanding of the industry allows him to deftly balance business priorities and legal concerns. Gary’s business judgment and experience spans the lifecycle of energy agreements. Gary has drafted and negotiated nearly every instrument that concerns the acquisition, divestiture, exploration, development, production, transportation, and marketing of crude oil and natural gas. This experience also allows him to help debtors and creditors quickly mitigate issues and seize opportunities.
Gary has also distinguished himself in the community, where he has contributed his time and treasure to creating opportunity for college and law school bound young adults and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
