Looking at Diversity in Competition Law

Before going any further, it is worth stressing that Chambers and Partners does not have any fixed targets or quotas around the diversity of the rankings – ideally, our rankings should paint an accurate picture of the legal market in each practice area and jurisdiction.  As it would be highly difficult and extremely time consuming to establish the exact proportion of female lawyers practising competition law in each jurisdiction, the numbers below are presented for interest, rather than to be compared to the current state of the market in each jurisdiction.

Overall, around 28% of the lawyers ranked in competition law sections in Europe are female.  Approximately 11% of those female lawyers are ranked in the top tier of our rankings for their respective jurisdictions, and they are highlighted below.

As might be expected, the majority of these are based in the larger jurisdictions, with Belgium, Germany and France having the highest number of female lawyers ranked.  There are though impressive showings from Norway and Romania with respectively the fourth and sixth highest number of ranked female lawyers – with the larger jurisdiction of Spain sandwiched between them in fifth place.

Looking at the percentage of ranked female lawyers in each jurisdiction, at least 50% of the ranked competition lawyers in Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania and Ukraine are female.  At the other end of the scale, fewer than 20% of the ranked lawyers in Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland and Turkey are female.

One interesting aspect to note is that when looking purely at the people ranked in the up-and-coming and associate to watch categories for competition law sections across Europe, there is an exact 50/50 split between male and female lawyers.  We have also highlighted the competition lawyers ranked in our up-and-coming and associate to watch categories below.
