For almost two decades prior to establishing Rooney IP, our founder, Kevin Rooney, was a partner in a Cincinnati, Ohio IP boutique law firm. There, he oversaw one of the largest practices at the firm and held several management roles over the years. During over 30 years of practicing intellectual property law, Kevin has been active in all areas of intellectual property. In addition to procuring intellectual property rights including patents, trademarks and copyrights, Kevin has extensive involvement in dispute resolution. This includes enforcing and defending the intellectual property rights of his clients. Many clients have commented that they appreciate his direct, intelligent, and honest approach to their intellectual property issues. He takes pride in responsiveness, attention to detail and an ability to exceed expectations when addressing their individual intellectual property needs.


Eric Bartlam has been an attorney for almost 20 years, and has been with Rooney IP since its founding. He is an intellectual property attorney focusing his expertise on patent preparation and prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, opinions on issues related to infringement, validity, patentability, licensing, and other legal agreements, as well as prosecution strategy for patent filings around the world. He also develops litigation strategy, participates actively in litigation and dispute resolution, and provides counsel on all intellectual property issues of our clients. Eric directs his patent practice toward mechanical and electro-mechanical technologies in wide ranging areas including medical devices, agricultural equipment, high security access devices, outdoor power equipment, industrial machinery, electronic/software controls, and vehicle accessories.

In addition to his patent practice, Eric is also actively involved in procuring trademarks for our clients and leading litigation efforts and post issuance administrative proceedings to enforce and defend our clients' intellectual property.


Our paralegal expertise includes two experienced intellectual property professionals, Melanie Hines and Diane Ruf. Melanie has over 30 years of experience in the field of intellectual property as an IP legal assistant, renewals and maintenance fee renewals administrator, paralegal and docketing specialist. Having worked closely with Kevin Rooney for most of those 30 years, Melanie has in-depth experience in U.S. and foreign patent application preparation, filing, prosecution and maintenance procedures. Melanie is also experienced in filing, examination, registration, post-registration processes and maintenance of trademark properties. Diane’s career spans over 15 years in the areas patent and trademark docketing and other intellectual property paralegal work for a diverse array of clients. Diane coordinates complex legal document preparation, prepares and files patent and trademark applications, and is involved in all phases of patent and trademark prosecution and litigation.
