Career

Jeremy Woolf is a very experienced leading tax barrister.

His advisory and contentious practice is wide-ranging, covering direct and indirect tax issues, including transactions in land, transactions in securities, transfers of assets abroad, inheritance tax the taxation of onshore and offshore trusts, EBTs, personal and corporate residence, domicile, taxation of mixed member partnerships, HMRC investigations and VAT and SDLT. Contentious work includes contractual, negligence, judicial review and variation of trust act and rectification proceedings and contractual disputes raising tax issues.

Issues connected to tax and human rights and EU law and retained EU law post Brexit have been a long-term interests of his. He has appeared in three references to the Court of Justice to the European Union relating to VAT. He has also made applications to the European Court of Human Rights. He was chair of the CIOT European and Human Rights working group and was also its alternate representative on the European Commission’s Expert Group on removing tax problems facing individuals who are active across borders within the EU. He is chair of the fiscal committee of CFE Tax Advisors Europe and was one of its representatives on the European Commission VAT Expert Group until he had to retire on account of Brexit. He has been awarded a certificate of merit by the CIOT for his work in these areas.

He is a member of the VAT Practitioners Group, CIOT, Stamp Taxes Practitioners Group, Revenue Bar Association, Chancery Bar Association and Administrative Law Bar Association.
