Gordon Currie of George Weston Limited

Gordon Currie is the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of the Weston Group, which includes both Weston Foods and Loblaw and their holdings. A long-standing GC, Currie is recognised for his involvement in several transformative deals, including 2013’s landmark acquisition by Loblaw of Shoppers Drug Mart. More recently, he is commended for his stewardship in a transaction which saw Loblaw sell its gas station operations to Brookfield Business Partners.

Sources say: “He is a very pragmatic business person and is recognised as such,” adding: “He is very prominent in the legal community in terms of sharing his insights and knowledge.” Moreover, Currie is commended for his promotion of alternative fee structures and his commitment to pro bono efforts. He is the vice chair of Pro Bono Ontario, an organisation which connects volunteer lawyers with individuals who cannot afford legal services.

In 2017, the in-house team at Weston under his leadership was recognised for its pro bono contributions as a recipient of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association Community Builder Award. Currie was previously Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Direct Energy Marketing, as well as a partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP.
