Practice Areas

Christine Cooper is an experienced barrister (17 years’ call) whose practice focuses on Court of Protection and adult social services cases. Her clients include local authorities, health bodies, the Official Solicitor and family members. Her expertise spans health and welfare cases and those involving property and financial affairs.

She is consistently instructed in complex judicial review and Court of Protection proceedings involving vulnerable adults. These cases are often heard by High Court judges.

Additionally Christine acts in cases related to the property and affairs of the elderly and people with disabilities. Frequently these involve public and private law issues where property ownership impacts upon the duties of public bodies.

Career

From January 2017 - December 2018, Christine was Crown Counsel Community Care on the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena. There, she was the government’s specialist lawyer on all health and welfare matters and dealt with claims alleging breaches of duties owed by the state to children and vulnerable adults.

Important cases have involved complex questions about capacity, deprivation of liberty and damages for persons kept in care homes unlawfully.

She was part of the legal team representing the claimants seeking damages for human rights breaches in the UK Supreme Court case of Williams v London Borough of Hackney [2018] 4 All ER 396.

Christine is an author of LexisNexis' Finance and Law for the Older Client. She also wrote the chapters on ‘property and affairs in the Court of Protection’ and ‘funding for care services’ for Dementia and the Law.
