With over 50 years’ successful track record, barristers are recognised as experts in their fields. Clients benefit from their dedication to responsiveness, commercial understanding and deep industry knowledge and experience. Work Undertaken
Clinical Negligence:
1 Chancery Lane provides expert representation to an array of clients, including private individuals and medical defence organisations. There is considerable experience of large, multi-party actions such as those involving organ retention, cervical screening, human growth hormone, cardiac surgery and HIV/ haemophilia. Members also act in individual cases, particularly those concerning catastrophic injuries acquired at or around the time of birth, as well as claims arising from mental illness
Personal Injury: The team offers a full service to solicitors acting for both Claimants and Defendants, local authorities, employers, insurers and others. In the last year members have been involved in many of the most important cases in the area, in particular cases involving human rights violations, abuse, and cross border work. The team has extensive experience in dealing with cases of the utmost sensitivity, including sexual abuse claims and cases involving catastrophic injury and fatal accidents.
Travel: International Personal Injury: 1 Chancery Lane exhibits strength and depth as one of the leading sets for international personal injury matters. Members of the team at all levels of call specialise in cross border jurisdiction and applicable law disputes, package and other travel related claims, claims under the Athens and Montreal Conventions, and commercial disputes between domestic and foreign suppliers.
Inquests & Inquiries: Members of 1 Chancery Lane at all levels of call are regularly instructed in inquests, particularly in cases involving suspected clinical negligence, deaths where the police have been involved, deaths involving suspected failings on the part of local authorities and high profile major incidents including the Manchester Arena terrorist attack and the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
Police Law: 1 Chancery Lane is widely considered to be one of the most respected sets for police law. Members are instructed directly by some of the most significant police forces and Local Authorities in the country. Defendant work spans fatal shootings, deaths in custody, malfeasance (including false imprisonment and malicious prosecution), complaints and discipline, search warrants, RIPA, firearms, road traffic, cautions and out-of-court disposals, and serious and catastrophic personal injury cases.
Professional Negligence: 1 Chancery Lane offers depth and breadth in both defendant and claimant professional negligence matters. Members provide expert advice on professional negligence claims throughout the Legal, Real Estate and Construction, and Insurance sectors. They also provide niche expertise in Local Authority and Education claims.
Civil Liberties & Human Rights: 1 Chancery Lane has represented clients in some of the leading cases involving the public sector, civil liberties and local government over the last 30 years. Over the last year there have been further examples of some of the highest profile precedent setting cases. The Supreme Court’s judgment in CN v Poole sets out what liability local authorities face when dealing with child safeguarding. The Supreme Court’s judgment in Barclays Bank is similarly the leading authority for the issue it covers — vicarious liability.
Real Estate Litigation: Chambers’ property works includes real property (e.g. easements and land registration issues), landlord and tenant, trusts and probate, housing and property disputes involving allegations of professional negligence or issues relating to insolvency.
