Keynote speaker Richard Ma provides an overview of the data privacy/protection regulatory environment in China and describes the most common commercial scenarios where a company would be faced with cross-border data compliance requirements. He flags out the difference of data transmitted out of the origin jurisdiction and data entering that jurisdiction. Insights are also shared with regards to whether some new laws and rules have been misinterpreted and what companies can do in response to remain commercially operational. The other two panellists Ms. Maggie Yin and Mr. Hongyi Jia each provide their own observations based on their experiences on data compliance frontline.

Maggie Yin’s remarks stress the importance of internal data categorisation and regular internal data review, including data auditing, while Hongyi Jia regards cross-border data transfer as a part of a company’s logistical operations and highlights the significance of coordinated cross-departmental effort in overseeing internal data management and security, and responding to ad-hoc regulatory requirement.
