Our formidable Local Government Team offers unrivalled experience and first hand knowledge and understanding of local authorities from the many in-house positions which our lawyers have held including: Chief Executive, Borough Secretary, Director of Law and Administration, City Clerk, and Monitoring Officer. This means that we can offer advice on a full range of local authority legal issues, including, vires, governance, procurement, planning, employment, shared services, property, litigation, FOI and functional issues such as waste, highways etc.

We act for over 100 authorities throughout England and a number in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and we are on local authority panels including London Boroughs, Birmingham, Tyne & Wear, West Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire / Northamptonshire. The team has acted on transactions with a total value in excess of £3 billion in the last 18 months and advises both public and private sector clients on commercial, public law and regulatory issues within the Local Government sector.

We offer our clients in depth industry knowledge and are regular contributors to guidance documents on various topics including CIPFA’s Shared Services Guidance, “Sharing the Gain” and the APSE Sustainable Procurement Toolkit.
