Work Highlights

Clifford Chance represented Shell in its appeal against the Hague District Court's ruling that it must reduce its scope 1 emissions, and must use best efforts to reduce its scope 2 and 3 emissions, by net 45% by 2030. The Hague Court of Appeal held that Shell had already set more ambitious targets in relation to scope 1 and 2 emissions than those sought by the claimant NGOs, rendering those claims moot, and further held that insufficient evidence had been brought in relation to scope 3 emissions to impose a duty on the company. Clifford Chance took over the case at the appeals stage and its lawyers did the oral advocacy before the appellate court.
