Prof. Dr. Jan Hegemann, a lawyer specialising in press law and freedom of speech matters as well as copyright and publishing law and a partner at Raue, has been appointed by the presidency of the German Federal Bar Association (BRAK) to the newly created Committee on Media Law.

With the new Media Law Committee, the BRAK intends to become more involved in legislative processes and professional public discussions on issues such as hate speech, fake news, suspicious reports and others. The honorary members of the committee monitor legal policy developments in the field of media law.

The Federal Bar Association has more than 30 specialist committees. Their main task is to prepare statements on draft legislation and expert opinions on individual professional policy issues for the presidency. Committee members often attend hearings in ministries or in parliament as experts. Committee members are appointed for four years.

Prof Dr Jan Hegemann is one of the best-known German lawyers in the field of media law and is regularly involved in fundamental proceedings and mandates. One focus of his work is the representation of publishers and other companies in press and freedom of speech law and in connection with their rights in digital media.
