INDUSLAW is pleased to announce the joining of Mr. Ananta Barua as a Senior Advisor in the Firm


Mr. Barua retired as a Whole Time Member of SEBI on 31.07.2023. He was appointed as a WTM of SEBI by Central Government from 01.08.2018 until his retirement. He was in charge of Market Intermediaries & Regulation Department, Enforcement Department, the Legal Affairs Department, Mutual Fund Department and Market Regulation Department. 


Mr. Barua was an Executive Director (“ED”) of SEBI for over 8 years from 19.05.2010. As an ED he was heading and responsible for regulation and supervision of Investment Management Department (consisting of Mutual Funds, AlF, PMS), Department of Debt & Hybrid Securities (Corporate Bonds, RIET, InvIT), Foreign Portfolio Investor and others. During his tenure, he was instrumental for laying regulatory framework for AIF, Riet, InvIT, bonds (corporate, municipal, green), securitised debt, foreign portfolios investor, research analyst, investment advisor, etc. As a SEBI board member, he dealt with policy proposals and approval of the regulations and also acted as Quasi-judicial authority and settlement authority.


Before that Mr. Barua has served SEBI from 1992 to 2010 in different roles in its Legal Affairs Department and Enforcement Department and assisted in laying regulatory framework for IPO, listing, market regulation, intermediaries, mutual funds, takeover, delisting, buyback, insider trading and various SEBI regulations.


He was also member of IOSCO Policy Committee on Investment Management from 2013 to 2017 and member of G20 Green Finance Study Group under G20 and United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) from 20.1.2016 till 12.07.2017.


Recently he has been appointed as a member of IFSCA Fund Management Advisory Committee in GIFT City.
