Rule 51 of the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) Rules, states that the Maltese Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen shall determine the minimum
basic wage for a calendar month of service for an able seamen or the equivalent therefor in the specific currency stated in the seafarer’s  employment agreement. This is to be done through the issuance of Merchant Shipping Notices ( MS Notice ). The Registrar-General shall be guided by the amount periodically set by the Joint Maritime Commission
or another body authorised by the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation.

In relation to this, the Maltese Merchant Shipping Directorate has issued an MS Notice to announce that, in accordance with the above rule, the minimum basic wage for a calendar
 month of service for an able seaman shall not be less than USD618 on the 01st July 2019. As of the 01st  January 2020 it shall not be less than USD625 and as of 01st January 2021, it shall not be less than USD641.
