The Philippine Institute of Arbitrators, in partnership with SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan (SyCipLaw), launched the first Justice Florentino P. Feliciano Arbitration Writing Competition.

Arbitration is an emerging dispute resolution practice area in the Philippines, and competition aims to contribute to the body of legal knowledge in the field of arbitration. The competition is also a timely endeavor to encourage law students to explore this field of law in their theses.

The competition is open to any student who, on the deadline for submission, is enrolled in the Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws program of any Philippine law school.

The deadline for submission is 5:00 pm, Wednesday, February 28, 2018.

Justice Florentino P. Feliciano was a leading figure in international arbitration, having acted as arbitrator and counsel in numerous international commercial, and trade and investment arbitration disputes before the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, the Stockholm Arbitration Institute, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and the Arbitration Tribunal under Article XV of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He was also a Member and was later appointed as President of the Asian Development Bank Administrative Tribunal.

Justice Feliciano was a partner of SyCipLaw for nearly 25 years. He served as the firm’s Managing Partner until 1986, the year when he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. He was subsequently elected to the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization in 1995 and was Chairman of the Appellate Body from 2000-2001.
