Global law firm Dentons has appointed Brussels-based partner Jean-Nicolas Maillard as Co-head of the Europe Competition and Antitrust Practice. In his new role he will co-lead the practice across 18 offices in Europe and Central Asia alongside the current leader Jörg Karenfort.

Jean-Nicolas Maillard has more than 25 years’ experience in EU and French competition law, focusing primarily on cartel and other antitrust investigations and on merger control procedures. He successively practiced in London, Paris and Brussels and has advised and represented companies in over 20 EU and French competition authority cartel cases. He also regularly advises clients on collaborations with competitors, distribution issues and antitrust compliance. He is ranked in Chambers Global 2023 as a Foreign Expert on France in the area of EU Competition.

He will serve alongside partner Jörg Karenfort, who has been leading the Europe Competition and Antitrust practice since 2011 and is also Head of the Global Competition and Antitrust practice. Sharing his time between Berlin and Brussels, he advises clients in European and German competition and regulatory matters, merger control, as well as in cartel and abuse of dominance proceedings.

Jean-Nicolas Maillard said: “In these first four years working and interacting with my European colleagues, I have come to appreciate their exceptional human and professional qualities. There is a true energy in this group and a clear willingness to collaborate. I am delighted of this opportunity to contribute further to the development of our team and to bring my ideas to our strategy in Europe, focusing first and foremost on our clients’ objectives and challenges”.

Tomasz Dąbrowski, Chief Executive Officer of Dentons Europe, commented, “Having practiced competition law in Brussels, Paris and London, Jean-Nicolas brings vast international experience that will benefit our clients. I am confident that as co-heads, Jean-Nicolas and Jörg, who is one of Germany’s top competition lawyers, will make a powerhouse leadership team.”

Jörg Karenfort commented, “The Competition and Antitrust group has grown so much in both size and depth and Jean-Nicolas is a perfect representative of this transformation combining excellence with positive spirit.”

Dentons’ global Competition and Antitrust group includes more than 200 lawyers around the world, including approximately 100 in Europe and Central Asia.
