Patent attorney Dr Isabel Tomerius joined Maiwald GmbH, one of Germany’s leading IP law firms, as partner with effect from October 1, 2023. Dr Tomerius is a specialist in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, laboratory and medical technology, life science, mechanics and optics. She will be based in the Munich office.

Dr Tomerius studied chemistry at the Julius Maximilian University in Würzburg, where she earned a doctorate in natural sciences. After training as a patent attorney, she worked for two years at the German Patent and Trademark Office, the Federal Patent Court and the Munich District Court (patent litigation chamber). In 1994, she was admitted to practice as a German patent attorney and European trademark attorney, and a year later as a European patent attorney. In 2000, Dr. Tomerius together with Friedrich Lang set up the patent law firm Lang & Tomerius in Munich serving clients across a broad range of practice areas for more than 20 years.

Dr Tomerius has many years of experience in opposition and appeal proceedings before the German and European Patent Offices and the Federal Patent Court. Further activities include drafting patent and utility model applications, conducting nullity proceedings before the German Federal Patent Court and the German Federal Supreme Court, handling licensing negotiations, enforcing IP rights in infringement proceedings before the relevant district courts as well as defending clients in infringement proceedings. Dr. Tomerius frequently represents clients in trademark and design matters before the German Patent and Trademark Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). She advises on matters relating to the Employee Inventions Act and on infringement of IP rights generally.
