International Capability Quadrants - FAQs

How can the International Capability Quadrants help me?

The Quadrants can be used to help clients to compare the international strengths of the leading firms in their chosen jurisdiction. By plotting each firm’s strength and breadth in one specific jurisdiction against the global reach of each firm’s overseas operations, Chambers can provide a visual display of the different combinations and advantages each firm can offer in a cross-border case.

The Quadrants show that within each market there are firms which offer very different approaches which in turn have different advantages for clients. By taking account of rankings across a wide range of relevant practice areas, the Quadrants compare firms which have a vastly different structure and approach towards cross-border work. This allows clients to have a view of the choices in the market as a whole, while concurrently seeing which firms are most similar to one another and comparing firms within a particular peer group.

What different types of firm are included in the International Capability Quadrants?

Chambers has produced numerous Quadrants looking at different countries and different practice groups within those countries and they incorporate a wide range of firms, including those which have a purely domestic presence in one country, right up to the largest international firms. Each Quadrant shows which firms perform best depending on what a client is looking for.

Firms which carry out a narrower, more specialised scope of work in the areas being considered or which excel in a particular niche gravitate towards the lower left.

Elite domestic firms which are resourced locally in one country but are experienced internationally gravitate towards the upper left quadrant.

Firms which are commonly chosen for their extensive global presence and typically act for international clients are often featured in the lower right quarter.

There are also firms which are able combine global reach and presence with a strong, top-ranked practice which is also heavily integrated in the local market, offering significant local resources. These gravitate towards the upper right quadrant.

How can I find out more about the firms in the Quadrants?

Clients can click on each firm featured on the Quadrant to see further detail on its scores for local strength and for global reach and to go to the firm’s Chambers profile and editorial. The profiles and editorial include more information about why the firm has been recommended by Chambers, supported by quotes from interviews with clients about their experiences.
