The firm acts for a varied and prestigious client base, including most of the leading P&I clubs, major port authorities, offshore drilling contractors and a number of local, UK and international shipping companies. Prominent clients include Sentinel Marine, Schlumberger, Skuld, Paragon Offshore, GulfMark UK Ltd, Aberdeen Harbour Board, and Peterhead Port Authority. The firm’s approach provides the necessary flexibility of response combined with dedicated expertise and experience. Mackinnons has established expertise in all aspects of commercial and litigation services in marine matters throughout Scotland, the UK and worldwide. In recent years, the firm has been involved in major shipping vessel sale and purchase transactions, shipbuilding and repair contracts, high-profile offshore and shipboard accident claims and marine casualties, the drafting and promotion of Harbour Revision Orders and in international oil pollution incidents. The firm routinely deals with personal injury claims and Admiralty actions such as ship arrest, collisions, salvage and cargo claims.

Consistent with Mackinnons’ ethos of having dedicated expertise in niche areas, the employment team has a particular focus on shipping and marine law generally. The employment team headed up by Nicola Gray, partner, routinely advise on technical and complex matters such as immigration issues, territorial jurisdiction, the rights of seafarers and whistle-blowing issues within the safety critical environment of offshore work.

The firm retains a strong client base in other traditional and general business sectors, providing a broad spectrum of commercial services. The firm’s commercial team deals with partnerships, LLPs, limited companies and joint ventures and can also advise on banking and finance matters and together with the litigation department, handle disputes and commercial litigation. Commercial property services are also provided to a wide variety of clients including port and harbour authorities. Private client services are also supplied by the firm, including wills, tax planning and when moving house. In private client matters the firm has a sensitive touch complementing its highly attuned legal and financial awareness.
