THE FIRM Potter Clarkson LLP is an award-winning, top-tier firm of European patent and trade mark attorneys and IP solicitors. It is one of the largest full-service IP practices in Europe with offices in the UK and continental Europe.

Founded in 1889, the firm employs over 75 qualified professionals and more than 90 paralegals, administrators and support staff. Originating in Nottingham, Potter Clarkson also has offices in London, Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Lund. The firm has operated successfully in Scandinavia for over 30 years and is highly regarded there by its significant client base. As a European firm, it is able to provide all relevant IP services within the UK and mainland Europe. Furthermore, the firm can assist with all international IP issues through its associations with top attorney firms worldwide — it therefore delivers the ideal combination of a truly international service with expert local knowledge.

Recognised as leaders in their field, the firm’s attorneys and lawyers are well known for handling some of the most complex and challenging patent and trade mark issues for clients around the globe, across a wide variety of technical areas and industry sectors. With unrivalled expertise in helping clients protect and commercialise their innovations, Potter Clarkson is particularly well-regarded for its successful prosecution, opposition and appeal work.

As well as providing all the traditional services associated with a firm of patent and trade mark attorneys, the firm has evolved to create a wider and full IP legal offering by employing IP solicitors (lawyers) within the firm’s dispute resolution and commercial department (‘DRaC’). There are currently six IP solicitors and three IP paralegals who work alongside the firm’s seven patent attorney litigators and one patent attorney advocate to create one of the largest and most comprehensive such teams in Europe.

With the ability to liaise seamlessly with other multi-disciplined attorneys, DRaC can offer the full range of litigation services in all English courts of law, as well as all non-contentious, commercial legal services associated with UK and European IP. In recent years, DRaC have pulled together sizeable teams from the firm’s lawyers and attorneys to conduct heavy-weight, international litigation of significant strategic and financial importance to their clients. This concentration of IP expertise, with its evident efficiencies, has attracted several referrals and new instructions leading to the team’s further growth.

The firm’s ability to offer this full range of IP legal services, makes it the European firm of choice for several global giants, household names, universities and a range of smaller companies and entrepreneurial individuals. Clients appreciate the bespoke, personal service with a partner being assigned to each client. They also appreciate the firm’s ability to work strategically with them to help them achieve the best possible commercial outcome from their investment in their IP, for the benefit of their business.
