Career

Having taken silk in 1995, when he was only 41, Alistair is one of the most experienced advocates in practice. He has appeared in a large number of complex and significant cases. Quotes from past Guides: “ Outstanding intellect”; “Outstanding lawyer”; “First class strategist and tactician”; “Accessible and responsive”; “ Eloquent, brave and effective”. As a junior, he also had an extensive civil practice, which has left him comfortable in both criminal and civil jurisdictions. Having developed a particular expertise in relation to commercial crime, he is on the SFO list of counsel both for prosecutions and POCA proceedings. Former Head of Chambers at Lincoln House, Manchester, and now also practising from 33 Chancery Lane, Alistair regularly advises businesses and individuals in relation to complex commercial frauds and issues such as bribery/money laundering/due diligence. He has defended directors and officers of companies in matters as diverse as: market rigging; false statements to the market; revenue fraud; MTIC fraud; factoring fraud; company flotation; restraint proceedings; and environmental crime. He has also prosecuted and defended in many high profile gross negligence manslaughter cases, along with murder cases of particular public interest. He has recently been involved in successful litigation against the Environment Agency and has advised and represented companies and directors charged with environmental crime. A former client, FD of a large public company says this about him:

“ It’s not just his intellect and his ability to marshal and present a complicated case which impresses, but he really works hard for his client. He instilled confidence in me when I was at a very low ebb and never wavered in his determination to get the right result."
