Practice Areas

Alan has specialised exclusively in family work for more than 20 years. Particular areas of expertise include finances upon divorce, civil partnership dissolution and cohabitee separation. Experienced in Trusts of Land Act and Schedule I, Children Act claims. Familiar with valuation issues arising out of assets such as offshore trusts, annuities and SIPPs. Advice upon pre and postnuptial settlements is an additional focus. Inheritance Act disputes and contentious probate matters are also covered. Alan is an experienced Collaborative lawyer.

Professional Memberships

Resolution-accredited expert on finances and children 2002. Resolution-accredited collaborative lawyer 2007. Alan is a member of Brightpod, a group of local Collaborative lawyers, and a founding member of Sussex Family Solutions, an inter-disciplinary network of collaborative lawyers, mediators, counsellors, life coaches and IFA's.

Career

Merseyside Probation Service; Manager Toxteth Victims' Support Scheme. Qualified as a solicitor in 1997. Became a partner in two large South-East firms before setting up Family Law Partners with two former colleagues in 2011.

In his role as head of innovation and technology at FLP, Alan has written a number of articles and provided media commentary on the use of technology, in particular AI, in family law: IBM case-study, Managing emotions by steering complex legal cases to successful resolution (Nov 2017); Law Society Gazette, Slave to the algorithm (June 2017); Legal Practice Management, How SMEs can gain a competitive edge (May 2017); Solicitors Journal, When knowing your client becomes artificial intelligence (March 2017).

BA (Hons) English (First) from Sussex University 1990. Diploma in Law University of Brighton 1992-94. Legal Practice Course (Commendation) University of Westminster 1995. Interests include: raising four children, independent cinema, literature, and the use of technology to improve public access to legal services.
