A veteran trial lawyer with more than three decades’ experience in complex commercial litigation, Karl has handled high-stakes litigation for major corporations, insurance carriers, health care institutions, energy companies, telecoms, universities and sports teams. He has litigated antitrust, intellectual property, RICO, complex contract, and high-profile insurance disputes.
Career
After earning his JD, Karl clerked for the Hon. John T. Noonan of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as well as Chief Justice Warren Burger and Justice Clarence Thomas of the US Supreme Court. Prior to joining Dentons in 2019, Karl served as managing partner of Steptoe & Johnson’s Phoenix office as well as Practice Group Leader for Steptoe’s worldwide complex commercial disputes group.
Personal
Karl played for the Canadian National Basketball Team in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, in the latter games setting a record for three-point shooting that has never been broken. His record-setting performance was particularly noteworthy in that he was already in his second year at Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the BYU Law Review and would go on to graduate summa cum laude (1990).
