Practice Areas
Joaquin heads up Freshfields’ Japan disputes team and helps lead the greater Asia disputes practice. His practice spans the globe, advising clients on disputes not only in Asia but also in Africa, South American, Europe and the UK, and the US. He represents global corporations and States in complex international commercial and investor-State disputes in international arbitration (including under ICC, LCIA, AAA, ICSID, HKIAC, SIAC, and UNCITRAL rules), as well as advising clients on internal investigations, sanctions, and litigation in national courts. He has worked extensively in the energy and mineral resources, telecommunications, finance, and automotive industries. In addition to his expertise in international arbitration, Joaquin’s practice focuses on ESG (environmental, social, governance) and sustainability issues ranging from risk assessment and due diligence to representing clients in ESG-related disputes, and he is a member of the firm’s Sustainability Leadership Group. Joaquin also has coordinated large-scale global disputes with local counsel in multiple jurisdictions and has also advised States on drafting legislation related to war crimes and devolution of governmental authority.
