Christian & Small Managing Partner Deborah Alley Smith’s practice is focused on post-judgment and appellate litigation in state and federal court. She devotes her time to research and writing and to preparing her partners for trial to ensure that significant issues are preserved in the event of an appeal. When it is necessary to seek post-judgment relief or to appeal (or the opposing side does so), Smith assists in the post-judgment briefing and presentation and handles the appeal.
In addition to briefing and arguing appeals and important motions, Smith often participates on trial teams in significant cases with an eye towards perfecting issues for appeal. She also frequently handles post-judgment motions and appeals in cases tried by lawyers at other firms and has handled appeals in many state and federal courts. One of her most memorable experiences was briefing, arguing and winning a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Smith is a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and the Birmingham Bar Foundation. She is a member of the Alabama State Bar and the Birmingham Bar Association.has been recognized by Chambers USA, and holds an AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
