Clifford B. Hendler is a partner in Crowell & Moring LLP’s Insurance/Reinsurance Group and concentrates on civil litigation and dispute resolution. As national counsel for several insurance groups, Cliff litigated high stakes coverage cases in over 35 states on issues ranging from environmental to asbestos, sexual abuse, hearing loss, pharmaceuticals, implants, and products incorporated into building. Serving as settlement counsel, Cliff has both negotiated creative settlements for carrier clients and also orchestrated amicable global resolutions of high-profile disputes involving literally dozens of insurance companies and hundreds of millions of dollars.

Cliff's work in dispute resolution extends beyond insurance. He has mediated cases for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the D.C. Superior Court, and served as an arbitrator for the D.C. Bar's Attorney's Fee Arbitration Board. For example, Cliff successfully mediated a 20-year long dispute over whether the Nixon tapes would be released to the public. Cliff's pro bono experience includes Clark v. Library of Congress, a First Amendment case involving federal investigations of lawful political activities by government employees which he won in the D.C. Circuit.
