Its breadth of financing expertise is far-reaching, with considerable experience advising on highly structured securities transactions, derivatives and corporate financings, amongst others. In particular, the team has advised on some of the country’s most significant project financing mandates, acting as legal counsel for a lending consortium led by L&T Infrastructure Finance Company on the establishment of a INR13.8 billion project financing facility relating to a greenfield wind power project in Gujarat. The firm remains a go-to choice of counsel for key lenders in the domestic market such as SBI, Bank of Baroda and IDBI Bank. It advised Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation in the USD1.2 billion sale of its 80% interest in a block located in the Krishna-Godavari offshore basin to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, an example of the firm’s experience on groundbreaking oil and gas transactions. More recently, the firm assisted DEG with the USD37 million financing of a 110 MW wind power project being developed by Renew Wing Energy (Sipla). The firm is also commended for handling project acquisitions and headline infrastructure work, particularly road transport and airport developments. Increasingly, the firm is being sought to advise on mandates across the SAARC region, with recent experience advising on project development work in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The firm has a diverse caseload, with a particular focus on high-profile insolvency and fraud disputes, as well as company and competition matters. The department is regularly entrusted on mandates in the technology, banking, power, manufacturing and construction sectors, among others. The team handles court litigation throughout India, whilst the practice also stands out for its cross-border arbitration capabilities, including the enforcement of foreign awards in India. In one work highlight, the firm represented Vodafone India and Vodafone Mobile Services in a cartel and abuse of dominance claim by Reliance Jio Infocomm, which related to the provision of Points of Interconnect. TMT Firm of the Year

J Sagar Associates has been highly active in the TMT sector over the past year, including advising on some of India’s most significant telecom acquisitions, notably including its work for Reliance Communications on the USD1.6 billion proposed sale of its mobile towers business to Brookfield Infrastructure Group. Other highlights have included acting for SSTL and its majority shareholder Sistema JSFC in connection with the demerger of SSTL’s telecom wireless business to Reliance Communications. The team also offers a particular strength on telecoms regulatory advice, including work for major names such as Tata Teleservices and Singtel. It is further highlighted for its depth of expertise in the technology sector, with experience acting for major multinational tech clients on issues ranging from fintech and ecommerce to data privacy and cloud computing. Interviewees highlight the firm’s strong transactional TMT work and experience advising on tech investments and acquisitions as well as media-related M&A, exemplified by the firm’s work assisting Brocade Communications Systems and Extreme Networks India in the latter’s acquisition of part of the former’s data centre business in Bengaluru. Lifetime Achievement Award


Ms Pallavi S Shroff is the managing partner of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas. Singled out by clients and peers alike for her outstanding achievements in the legal field, Ms Shroff has been practising law for over 36 years and is the national practice head of dispute resolution at the firm, having worked on some of the most complex and influential litigation and arbitration cases in India over the past three decades. She has an illustrious track record appearing in the Supreme Court and High Courts of India, and is considered by her clients to be “the most prominent litigation solicitor in the country and the queen of Indian litigation.” Among her many career highlights, under her stewardship the firm was engaged by the ICCI and CII to represent the entire Indian industry in the presidential reference proceedings brought before the constitution bench of the Supreme Court. The subsequent judgement passed is one of the most influential rulings in India relating to the methods of disposal of natural resources in India.

A Competition specialist, she is regarded by interviewees as a “stalwart in the field of competition law,” and has played a key role in the development of the new competition law regime, through her role as a member of the influential SVS Raghavan Committee and appointment to the Advisory Committee of regulations set up by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). More recently, she has taken a leading role acting for Agrium and PotashCorp in dealings with the CCI arising out of their USD36 billion multinational merger. Her work to further the development of India as a regional hub for arbitration is another key point of note, having been appointed to the ICC Court of Arbitration and more recently speaking on the panel at the 2nd edition of
the ICC India Arbitration Day in Mumbai.
