What the team is known for

Acclaimed shipping finance practice specialising in high-value and cross-border transactions. Assists bank syndicates and individual lenders with the financing of new vessel acquisitions or sale and leaseback transactions. Acts for creditors on the restructuring of existing shipping loans. Possesses significant expertise in contentious shipping mandates, including groundings, collisions and damage claims. Additionally offers support in charter party disputes, bunkers claims and hull fouling issues.

Strengths

One client praises the lawyers' "outstanding savoir faire," going on to note: "Their practical and expeditious way of addressing the issues at hand and their constructive approach allow a very efficient flow of information which is determining and vital during the dispute resolution process."

"They offer a very commercial view and won't get bogged down in the details," states another source, adding: "They make the job easier and cheaper."

He has experience in litigation arising from explosions at sea or engine breakdowns. He also advises on claims arising under war risk policies. Clients hail him as "extremely experienced and commercially minded."

One client reports that Evangelos Catsambas is "responsive and diligent," while a second source describes him as a "problem solver." His broad contentious practice encompasses cargo claims, disputes over the application of off-hire clauses and cases relating to vessel underperformance.

According to one source, George Iatridis "stands out because of his incredible talent in court." The same interviewee also highlights Iatridis's "tremendous attention to detail." He handles a broad array of maritime disputes, including pollution, wreck removal cases and shipbuilding disputes.

Overview

WFW has been entrenched in the Greek market since the opening of its Piraeus office in March 1984 and was the first international law firm to open in Greece with a team of English qualified solicitors.

Since then, we have led the way in establishing shipping and shipping finance work in Greece, which has encouraged many other English and international law firms to follow our lead and open up in Piraeus/Athens.

After more than 30 years in Greece, WFW remains a pioneering firm in the market and the pre-eminent shipping firm in the country with a team of lawyers advising both financiers and borrowers on English and Greek law on the most high-profile commercial shipping and finance matters. As far as we are aware, we have the largest and most experienced team in Greece which specialises in non-contentious shipping and ship finance matters.

Our partners are often interviewed by key industry and national press and speak, or act as moderators, at key industry events (for example George Paleokrassas regularly acts as a moderator at one of the panels at the Marine Money conference in Athens held in October each year).
